THE RECURRING CAST

The Characters

The people who live on Narrow Highway. Original. Family-curated.

A curated internet should feel inhabited โ€” a town, not an empty mall. These are the recurring characters that appear across our broadcast, our curriculum, our hymns, and our tools. They're original to Narrow Highway: no Disney, no licensed brand, nothing borrowed. Each has a role, a voice, and a place where the family meets them.

The cast grows as the substrate grows. Operator approves every addition. Visual treatments follow an Art-Deco-evolved house style.

The Shepherd

GUIDE ยท LIVES IN THE WALK + CONVERSATIONAL LAYER

A calm guide who appears wherever a family member needs a thoughtful companion. Pastoral, gentle, never lecturing. The Shepherd carries the four gates with him โ€” Red, Floor, Brothers, God โ€” and asks them quietly when someone is wrestling with a decision. He answers from Scripture, the Codex, and the Almanac, not from himself.

Seen at: the Walk deck (four-gate reflection), the conversational layer on every page, the future Shepherd OS that grows into a family-curated AI.

The Pilgrim

HOST OF JOURNEYS ยท CURRICULUM + REading PLANS

A travelling companion borrowed in spirit from Bunyan (without being Christian or Faithful โ€” those names stay in the original Pilgrim's Progress). Our Pilgrim has his own pack, his own road, his own map. He hosts the longer curriculum journeys: a 40-day pilgrimage through the Imitation of Christ, a year through the Bible, a season through Pilgrim's Progress. He doesn't preach. He walks alongside.

Seen at: Reading plans, the curriculum's longer-form arcs, the Pilgrim's Progress 40-day plan, future overnight broadcast hours.

The Lamplighter

CUSTODIAN OF THE CODEX

The keeper of the manuscript. He lights the lamps along the long shelves of the Codex each evening and checks the cross-references each morning. When the engine produces a verification packet, the Lamplighter signs it. When something doesn't check out, the Lamplighter is the one who quietly removes it from the shelf. He is silent during broadcasts and never appears at meal time, but he is the reason the Codex stays clean.

Brother Watchman

CALLS THE HOURS OVERNIGHT ยท OVERNIGHT BROADCAST + BEDTIME

A night-watchman in the medieval-monastery tradition. Calls the canonical hours softly through the night on the channel โ€” Compline, Matins, Lauds โ€” between hymns and overnight scripture. His voice is the low pre-dawn voice the household hears when they wake early. He is the reason 02:00โ€“05:00 on the channel is reverent and not empty bumpers.

Seen at: the overnight channel block (00:05โ€“05:05), bedtime story cards, the 4 a.m. devotional. Future: a daily Compline audio surface.

The Cartographer

MAKES THE MAP ยท ATLAS + GEOGRAPHY + WELCOME PAGE

An old-school chart-maker who delights in showing a family where things are. He drew the welcome map, he keeps the channel guides, and he loves a good archaeological reconstruction of a Bible city. When the curriculum needs a map of the Apostle Paul's journeys, the Cartographer makes it. When a new tool comes online, the Cartographer adds it to the welcome page.

Seen at: the Welcome map, the Atlas, future Bible-geography curriculum modules, the channel directory.

The Apothecary

HERBS + HEALTH + KITCHEN-TABLE WISDOM

An older woman with a small herb garden and a long memory. She knows that an onion poultice will draw out a splinter and that lavender helps a child sleep and that you should never give honey to an infant. She does not give medical advice โ€” she shares what the herb traditions of the church have known and what the engine has verified. She's why the Apothecary deck is calm and not a wellness-influencer feed.

Seen at: the Apothecary deck, the herbal references in the Codex, the Practical curriculum track.

The Bell

CALLS THE START OF EVERY BLOCK ยท STATION ID

Not exactly a person โ€” more of a small brass bell that rings between every channel block. It's the bridge between Hymns Hour and Classic TV Morning, between Saturday Cartoons and Saturday Matinee. The Bell is the rhythm of the channel. Children who watch enough Narrow Highway will recognize it by sound alone. It is the first character we built and the smallest.
